EWE Awards Contract for Germany's First Commercial-Scale Hydrogen Storage Using H2dry Technology in Huntorf

German utility EWE AG has contracted Bilfinger SE to plan, install, and commission a hydrogen processing facility at its Huntorf storage site in Lower Saxony, marking the first commercial deployment of H2dry dehumidification technology at scale. EWE is converting an existing natural gas cavern into a hydrogen storage facility with approximately 16 million standard cubic meters capacity, scheduled to connect to Germany's national hydrogen core network (Wasserstoffkernnetz). The facility will create a flexible link between hydrogen production, transport, and consumption, helping balance intermittent renewable energy. This milestone follows the successful H2CAST project in which Plug Power and partners filled salt caverns with 90 tonnes of hydrogen, demonstrating that Germany's extensive underground storage infrastructure can be adapted for the hydrogen economy.

California's 2025 Energy Code Mandates Battery-Ready New Homes, Expands Commercial Storage Requirements

California's updated Title 24 Building Energy Efficiency Standards, effective January 1, 2026, require all newly constructed single-family homes with electrical service greater than 125 amps to be battery energy storage system (BESS) ready, with conduit, panel space, and electrical capacity pre-installed. The code also expands mandatory BESS installation to more nonresidential building types including assembly, worship, and laboratory occupancies that install solar PV, tightening the linkage between PV size and required battery capacity. Qualifying residential batteries of at least 7.5 kWh can reduce mandated solar PV system size by 25 percent. This represents the most aggressive state-level building code requirement for storage infrastructure in the U.S., creating immediate market pull for residential storage solutions and establishing readiness as the baseline for new construction.

Vattenfall Awards 1 GWh Battery Storage Project to Fluence in Germany

European utility Vattenfall has selected Fluence Energy to deliver a 254 MW/1,000 MWh battery energy storage system in Brunsbüttel, Germany, to be built at a decommissioned nuclear power plant site. The four-hour duration project demonstrates utilities' commitment to large-scale storage infrastructure to support renewable integration in Germany's energy transition. This utility-scale deployment highlights the growing recognition that multi-hour energy storage is essential for grid stability as renewables penetration increases, creating a pathway for residential LDES solutions like Hyviva's to follow.

Home Battery Storage Market Reaches 46.1 GWh Globally in 2026 as Competition Intensifies

Global residential energy storage capacity is forecast to reach 46.1 GWh in 2026, with Europe accounting for 15.4 GWh of total supply according to InfoLink Consulting. The top three suppliers—Fox ESS, Sigenergy, and Deye—each hold roughly 11% market share. The industry is entering a maturity phase with focus shifting from raw capacity growth toward integrated systems combining solar, storage and smart energy management. Eastern Europe is flagged as an accelerating demand hotspot driven by grid disruptions making battery systems an energy resilience necessity. Growing competition is driving down per-kWh prices for buyers globally, but the ~4-hour duration limitation of lithium batteries leaves seasonal storage needs unaddressed, opening opportunities for longer-duration alternatives.

Australia Home Battery Installations Surge 52% to 276,011 in H1 2026, Outpacing Rooftop Solar Growth

Australian households installed 276,011 home battery storage systems in the first half of 2026, representing a 52% increase from the previous six months and outpacing rooftop solar growth for the first time. This milestone demonstrates that residential energy storage is transitioning from niche to mainstream as homeowners seek energy independence and backup power. The surge suggests growing consumer acceptance of home batteries as essential infrastructure rather than optional add-ons, validating the residential LDES market opportunity that Hyviva is pursuing.

EnergyPathways Closes £1.75M Funding for MESH Hybrid Storage Project Combining Hydrogen and Compressed Air

UK-based EnergyPathways announced closing of £1.75 million in funding to advance its MESH project, which combines 300 megawatt compressed-air energy storage with natural gas and hydrogen storage in a 55 gigawatt-hour long-duration configuration. The project targets hydrogen operations for 2029-2030 and long-duration storage by 2031-2032, subject to policy, approvals and financing. MESH represents an emerging hybrid approach to LDES that integrates multiple storage technologies and energy carriers. This funding milestone demonstrates investor interest in novel LDES architectures that can provide seasonal storage capabilities beyond what batteries alone can deliver.
